Caldicott Guardians

UK NHS and social care organisations are required to appoint a Caldicott Guardian to ensure compliance with the National Data Guardian’s principles for data protection.

Medical Data Guard offers outsourced Caldicott Guardian services, supporting health and social care organisations in effectively processing, managing, and safeguarding patient data in line with regulatory requirements.

Caldicott Guardian Services:

Medical Data Guard can serve as the Caldicott Guardian for UK NHS organisations, their suppliers, and social care providers.

What are Caldicott Guardians?

Caldicott Guardians were established following the 1997 report by Dame Fiona Caldicott’s committee on the Review of Patient-Identifiable Information, predating data protection laws like the GDPR.

All NHS organisations are now required to appoint a Caldicott Guardian to ensure compliance with the “Caldicott Principles” when handling patient data. While it is not mandatory for social care providers and other data holders to have a dedicated Guardian, it is essential that they understand and manage patient data in accordance with these principles.
